Cataracts

Cataracts may be a common condition as you age, but that doesn’t make them normal. It also doesn’t mean that you have to live with them. Our team at Alice Family Eye Center would like to share seven signs to watch for so that you can get to the eye doctor early and address the problem.

Shift in Vision

Many people with cataracts notice a sudden and complete change in their vision. For example, those that can see fine up close but need glasses for distant objects might wake up needing glasses for nearby objects but see distant objects fine. This is called a myopic shift.

Seeing Halos

If you start to notice halos around lights or you become sensitive to their glare, it’s usually due to cataracts. These signs usually show up in the early stages.

Trouble Seeing at Night

Due to the glare sensitivity and the halos, driving at night can be quite a challenge with cataracts. If you find that you can’t see well when you drive in the dark, it’s time to see your eye doctor.

Cloudiness

Having cloudy vision is common with cataracts, but it usually doesn’t happen all at once. Instead, you will notice the cloudiness worsens over time.

Double Vision

Double vision can be an issue related to many things. However, if you start to see double while experiencing other signs, it’s probably due to cataracts.

Changes in How You See Color

The longer you have cataracts, the more yellow or brown they will become. This will impact how you see color.

Constant Changes in Prescription

Cataracts can also trigger a constant need for new eyeglasses. You can expect to need a stronger prescription as you age, of course, but cataracts require a new prescription much more often.
